2009 Election - Races in Philadelphia

The next election in Philadelphia and the region is the November 3, 2009 general election.

Important dates for the November 3, 2009 Municipal Election

August 3          Last day to circulate and file nomination papers
August 10        Last day for withdrawal by candidates nominated by nomination papers 
                           or in the Primary
October 5         Last day to register to vote before the November election 
                           (voter registration application must be postmarked by this day)
October 27       Last day to apply for a civilian absentee ballot (we recommend this application
                           is sent as early as possible)
October 30       Last day for County Boards of Elections to receive filled out absentee ballots 
                           (County must receive it at their office by 5pm, post marks will not be honored)
November 3     MUNICIPAL ELECTION
November 10   Last day for County Board of Elections to receive voted military and overseas absentee ballots
                           (note: must be postmarked no later than November 2)


Races and Candidates:

Pennsylvania Supreme Court - voters will choose one

Pennsylvania Superior Court - voters will choose three

Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court - voters will choose two

Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas - voters will choose seven

Philadelphia Municipal Court - voters will choose four

Philadelphia District Attorney

City Controller

Judge Retention Elections - YES/NO votes on judges currently serving


Judge of Election - voters will choose one in each division

Voters in each division in the City will vote for Judge of Elections, who leads the Election Board for each division.  He or she will be elected to a four-year term.

Inspector of Election - voters will choose one in each division

Voters in each division in the City will vote for Majority and Minority Inspector of Election.  Each voter may cast one vote for Inspector, and the candidate with the highest number of votes will be the Majority Inspector, while the candidate with the second highest number of votes will be the Minority Inspector.  They each will be elected to a four-year term.
