Philadelphia City Commissioners
The City Commissioners are a three person bi-partisan board that serves as the Board of Elections for the city of Philadelphia. The Commissioners are responsible for all administrative functions that relate to city elections and voter registration. In advance of each election, the Commissioners locate accessible buildings to use as polling places for each of the city’s roughly 1,600 voting divisions, prepare poll books to determine whether or not a voter is eligible to vote at that polling place and ensure that each polling place has voting machines. Following an election, the Commissioners are responsible conducting an official count to certify the official election results, including all votes cast by absentee, alternative, and provisional ballot.
The three elected City Commissioners are Chairwoman Margaret Tartaglione
(Democrat – elected 1975), Anthony Clark (Democrat – elected 2007), and
Joseph Duda (Republican – elected 1995). Since they are not permitted
to do their jobs in 2011 because they are running for reelection, three
Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas judges are currently serving as the
Acting City Commissioners: President Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe, Charles
J. Cunningham, III, and Leon Tucker.
Notes From the City Commissioners' Weekly Meetings
The City Commissioners conduct a weekly public meeting on Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM with the Board of Elections department heads. Meetings are currently held in Room 387, City Hall.
