A pivotal year in Philadelphia politics is now underway. Voters will choose a new Mayor, with several candidates already declaring their intention to seek that office and others are waiting in the wings. All of City Council is up for election, and challengers to the incumbents are already emerging. What happens over the next several months leading up to the May 15 primary election will give us a strong indication of whether our future leaders intend to change the political culture in Philadelphia or continue with the discredited politics of the past. As interested citizens committed to Philadelphia’s future, all of us have an important role to play in this election.

Local scandals and unending investigations have caused citizens to lose confidence in government and in their elected representatives. Philadelphia’s soiled reputation gives businesses a reason not to create new jobs here and people a reason not to live here. The damages are costly and don’t stop there. You have an outstanding chance to begin to change all that.

Philadelphia continues to permit non-competitively-bid contracts for certain types of professional services, including legal services. Some mayoral administrations have given a disproportionate amount of City business to favored firms and companies.
